Valentines slouchy beanie

I've been seeing a lot of Valentine's inspired crochet lately, and decided that I'd create something of my own.
I love crocheting slouchy beanies, they're easy to make, don't take much time and look great! I have made tons of them using one pattern and just substituting the type of stitch I want.

I used a 5mm hook, Caron Simply Soft in Autumn Red and Black

Start by measuring the circumference of your head, make sure to measure around the area where the band will eventually be sitting.(My measurement was 22 inches, remember it is supposed to fit loosely!)

NOTE: I use the same type of band for my slouchy beanies as my arm warmers and fingerless gloves. I really like the ribbed band look :)

Ch 9

Single crochet into the second chain from the hook and each chain for the row(8 stitches)

Ch 1, Single crochet in the back loop of the same stitch as ch 1 and every stitch for the row(Every row will have 8 st)

Ch 1, single crochet in back loops for the row

Repeat until the ribbed band measures about 22 inches( Aprox. 90 rows)
NOTE: If your head measurement is larger or smaller than mine, make sure your number of rows and stitches is a multiple of 5 to obtain the same result.

Fold the band in half and match ends, slip st to join

Round 1 → Ch 1, single crochet in same stitch as ch 1, and through every row(90 stitches), slip stitch into the first single crochet of the row to join. (Do not cut off yarn)

Change colors(Leave the red yarn behind for now, do not cut off)

Round 2 → Ch 3, double crochet in the same stitch as ch 3 and in every stitch for the row, slip st into first double crochet to join.

Round 3 → Ch 3, double crochet in the same stitch as ch 3, double crochet in the next stitch, join the red yarn, make a V cluster stitch(in this row all double crochets are made with the black yarn and all V cluster stitches are made with the red)
*Double crochet in the next 3 stitches, V cluster st in the next st *.

Cluster Stitch-
Yarn over, go through stitch, pull yarn through, yarn over pull through 2 loops(1 loop left on hook). Yarn over, go through stitch, pull yarn through, yarn over pull through 2 loops(3 loops on hook). Yarn over pull through all 3 loops.

V Cluster Stitch-
Cluster stitch, ch 1, cluster stitch

Repeat from * to * for the row, once you're at the last V cluster stitch join black yarn and slip stitch into the first double crochet of the row.

Round 4 → Ch 3, double crochet in same st as ch 3, double crochet in ch 1 space of V cluster stitch, double crochet in the next 3 st, double crochet in ch 1 space.
Continue for the row. Slip stitch into the first double crochet of the row. Re-join red yarn(Leave black yarn behind for now)

Repeat rounds 2,3 and 4 in opposite colors(all double crochets are red, all V cluster stitches are black)

Repeat rounds 2,3 and 4 again in original colors(All double crochets are black, all V cluster stitches are red)

Cut off black yarn, join red

Ch 3, double crochet in the same stitch as ch 3 and every stitch for the row, slip stitch in the first double crochet to join,
Repeat this for a total of 4 rows of double crochet

Switch to 4.25 mm hook

Single crochet for 2 rows, slip stitch to join at the end and cut off yarn

Leave a long tail to sew the top of the hat closed using a running stitch through the front posts of the single crochets, sew shut.

And voilà, your slouchy beanie is complete! I'm contemplating adding a pom pom to mine, I adore slouchy beanies with pom poms ^-^.

I hope the pattern was helpful!

                                                                Sincerely,
                                                                      Evelyn
